  ZERO POINT OF MEANING

NON-FUNCTIONAL, NON-REPRESENTATIONAL, ELEMENTARY, EXPERIMENTAL AND CONCEPTUAL PHOTOGRAPHY IN CROATIA 

 “The exhibition Zero Point of Meaning. Non-functional, Non-representational, Elementary,  Experimental and Conceptual Photography in Croatia seeks to explore the very nature of art through photography as an experimental and research medium. Artists who have reached for a camera at a particular point in their artistic career (or instructed others to shoot something particular, or simply took over – appropriated – other people’s photographs) were not interested in the technical capacities of the medium or even the quality of their shots; instead, they considered photography as a sort of coordinate that functioned like an echo of some event or absent artwork, like a channel communicating the conceptualization or realization of a particular artistic idea. All this testifies of important changes in the way photography was understood and interpreted as art, especially changes in its modes of action, the expansion of its field of interest, and the way it communicated artistic subjects, all of which was influenced by the political and social circumstances from the 60s onwards.” (From the text by Sandra Križić Roban) “The exhibition presents a broad range of photographic expressions: ontological explorations that seek to discover the essence of photography, approaches that cultivate an analytical relationship with the medium and practices that result from a wish to name its object of perception (noema), artworks that emphasize the tautological nature of photography, transformations from two-dimensional plains into sculptural bodies – an object or even a book – radical attacks on photographic canons, and the non-photographed, elementary photography that results from direct interventions on photo-paper. (…) Owing to the multilayered character of the exhibited artworks, we sought to liberate the artist-visitor communication from all mediation and additional interpretations, making it as direct as possible. Notes on the conceptual and the documentary in contemporary photography Author: Reinhard Braun (Camera Austria) Reinhard Braun is a writer and curator living in Graz (Austria). He is author of numerous publications and lectures, as well as lecturer in the field of contemporary art and photography. From 2007–2010, he was curator for visual arts at Steirischer Herbst festival in Graz. Since 2011, he has been the editor of the Camera Austria International journal and the exhibition director of Camera Austria, Graz. – SATURDAY, 18 JUNE 2011, 10:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M. Action Energy of the Circle Moderator: Zlata Medak (Croatian Photographic Union) Location: Art pavilion (front court) – TUESDAY – THURSDAY, 28–30 JUNE 2011 Workshop The Photographer’s Body: Body – Tool Author and moderator: Marko Ercegović What is it that influences photography in the making? If a photographer carries a camera in his hands, his body can be understood as a tool of photography. The result largely depends on the direction in which he is moving while carrying the camera. An important element is his height, as well as the moment in which he turns his head or the road he has taken while photographing. How fast is he walking? Does he stop and wait on his way? Has he looked down or up at a decisive moment? Squatted down or straightened his back? Has he got up after sitting down? Has he taken this or that way? And when he came across a scene, did it matter whether he was bent, stooping, or stretched on his toes to see things better? Or was it all that at the same time? At this workshop we are looking for answers about the ways in which the photographer influences his work with his body and its movements. Participation should be registered with Croatian Photographic Union by Friday, 24 June 2011 at the latest by telephone 01 4848 793 or e-mail predrag.bosnar@hztk.hr (Predrag Bosnar, secretary of the Union). On the first day, the participants will gather at 5:00 p.m. in the exhibition halls of the Art Pavilion. This free three-day workshop includes a lecture by the author, individual photographing by the participants, and a discussion group, as well as the presentation of results. The workshop is intended for age 20+ and the number of participants is limited to 10. All participants must bring their own cameras (analogue or digital). – SATURDAY, 2 JULY 2011, 11:00 A.M. Meeting the Artist Sandro Đukić This meeting with an artist is conceived as a public talk with Sandro Đukić and a tour around the exhibition, focusing on the problem of photography as a medium, which is the main field of interest of this multimedia artist. Sandro Đukić graduated painting from the Academy of Fine Arts Zagreb in 1989, in the class of Đuro Seder. He also attended classes by Nam June Paik and Nan Hoover (1989–1993) and the master class of Nan Hoover (1993–1994) at Kunstakademie Dusseldorf. His artistic residencies include New York in 1990 (Reise Stipendium Kunstakademie Dusseldorf and Goethe-Institut), Reykjavik (1992, DAAD, Islandic Colledge of Art, Workshop), and Plasy (1994, Hermit Foundation, International InterdisciplinarySsymposium Transparent Messenger). His artworks are included in the following collections: Museum am Joanneum, Graz; Marino Cettina Gallery, Umag; Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rijeka. – TUESDAYS: 21 AND 28 JUNE, 5 AND 12 JULY, AT 6:00 P.M. Guided tour The one-hour guided tour with the curators is free for all visitors at the times listed above (registration is not needed, except for larger groups). – The exhibition is a result of research by the curators, in close cooperation with the following artists: Boris Cvjetanović, Petar Dabac, Sandro Đukić, Igor Eškinja, Ivan Faktor, Tomislav Gotovac, Boris Greiner, Vlatka Horvat, Željko Jerman, David Maljković, Antun Maračić, Enes Midžić, Marijan Molnar, Ivan Posavec, Davor Sanvincenti, Edita Schubert, Mladen Stilinović, Slaven Tolj, Goran Trbuljak, Josip Vaništa, Mirjana Vodopija, and Fedor Vučemilović. – The visitors will have the opportunity to see various documentary films and videos (as well as use the library), such as the documentary series on Photography in Croatia (made in coproduction of the Croatian Television) on the following artists: Boris Cvjetanović, Petar Dabac, Željko Jerman, Antun Maračić, Ivan Posavec, Goran Trbuljak, and Fedor Vučemilović. We would like to thank Anamarija Ganza Habjan for helping us to acquire these documentaries. Total duration: 68:44 min. In addition to this, visitors will have the opportunity to see part of the film about Edita Schubert prepared by Leonida Kovač and Ana Opalić. – Instead of a catalogue, the exhibition of Croatian Photographic Union 2011 will be accompanied by a thematic issue of Život umjetnosti (89/2011), a bilingual journal for contemporary visual arts published by the Insitute for Art History Zagreb. Reinhard Braun je kustos koji živi u Grazu (Austrija). Autor je brojnih publikacija i predavanja, a bavi se podučavanjem o suvremenoj umjetnosti i fotografiji. Od 2007. do 2010. bio je kustos za vizualne umjetnosti Steirischer Herbst festivala u Grazu. Od 2011. izdavač je časopisa Camera Austria International i izložbeni direktor Camera Austria u Grazu.

Što sve utječe na fotografiju koja nastaje?
Ako fotograf u ruci nosi aparat, njegovo se tijelo shvaća kao fotografski alat. Rezultat uvelike ovisi o smjeru u kojem se kreće noseći fotoaparat. Presudna je i činjenica koliko je visok, gdje je u jednom trenutku zakrenuo vrat i u koju ulicu je skrenuo fotografirajući. Kojom brzinom hoda? Da li da stane i čeka? Da li je pogledao dolje ili gore u presudnom trenutku? Da li čučnuti ili stajati? Ustati se, kad već sjedi? Drumom ili šumom? I kad je već pred nađenim prizorom, što znači i koliko je važna gesta saginjanja, savijanja leđa ili propinjanja na prste? Ili i jedno i drugo istovremeno? Odgovore o načinima na koje tijelom i njegovim kretnjama fotograf utječe na svoj rad tražimo u okviru radionice.

Sudjelovanje je potrebno najaviti u Hrvatski fotosavez najkasnije do petka, 24. 6. 2011., na telefon 01 4848 793 ili na e-mail predrag.bosnar@hztk.hr (Predrag Bosnar, tajnik Saveza). Okupljanje prvog dana radionice je u 17 sati u izložbenom postavu u Umjetničkom paviljonu. Trodnevna besplatna radionica uključuje predavanje autora, individualno snimanje sudionika i diskusijsku grupu te konačno prezentaciju rezultata. Radionica je namijenjena za dob 20+, a broj sudionika je ograničen na 10. Za sudjelovanje je potrebno imati osobni fotoaparat (analogni, digitalni).

Susret s umjetnikom
Sandro Đukić

Susret s umjetnikom zamišljen je kao javni razgovor sa Sandrom Đukićem i razgled izložbe fokusiran na probleme fotografskog medija kojima je zaokupljen ovaj multimedijalni umjetnik.

Sandro Đukić diplomirao je slikarstvo 1989. u klasi prof. Đure Sedera na Akademiji likovnih umjetnosti u Zagrebu. Pohađao klase Nam June Paika i Nan Hoover (1989.–1993.) i majstorski studij Nan Hoover (1993.–1994.) na Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Studijski boravio u New Yorku 1990. (Reise Stipendium Kunstakademie Düsseldorf i Goethe-Institut), Reykjaviku (1992., DAAD, Islandic Colledge of Art, Workshop) i Plasyju (1994., Hermit Foundation, International interdisciplinary symposium Transparent Messenger). Njegovi radovi nalaze se u zbirkama: Museum am Joanneum, Graz; Galerija Marino Cettina, Umag; Muzej moderne i suvremene umjetnosti, Rijeka.

Stručno vodstvo

Posjet izložbi u trajanju od 1 sat uz stručno vodstvo kustosica organiziran je besplatno za sve zainteresirane u navedenim terminima (nije potrebno najavljivati dolazak, osim u slučaju većih grupa).


Izložba je rezultat istraživanja kustosica u suradnji s umjetnicima: Boris Cvjetanović, Petar Dabac, Sandro Đukić, Igor Eškinja, Ivan Faktor, Tomislav Gotovac, Boris Greiner, Vlatka Horvat, Željko Jerman, David Maljković, Antun Maračić, Enes Midžić, Marijan Molnar, Ivan Posavec, Davor Sanvincenti, Edita Schubert, Mladen Stilinović, Slaven Tolj, Goran Trbuljak, Josip Vaništa, Mirjana Vodopija, Fedor Vučemilović.


U sklopu dokumentarnih filmskih i video priloga (uz biblioteku) posjetitelji mogu pogledati priloge iz ciklusa Fotografija u Hrvatskoj (nastali u produkciji HRT-a) o umjetnicima: Boris Cvjetanović, Petar Dabac, Željko Jerman, Antun Maračić, Ivan Posavec, Goran Trbuljak, Fedor Vučemilović. Najiskrenije zahvaljujemo Anamariji Ganza Habjan na pomoći oko ustupanja priloga. Ukupno trajanje priloga: 68:44 min. Osim toga, moći će se pogledati dio materijala koji su Leonida Kovač i Ana Opalić snimile o Editi Schubert.


Izložbu Hrvatskog fotosaveza 2011. umjesto kataloga pratit će tematski broj dvojezičnog časopisa za suvremena likovna zbivanja Život umjetnosti (89/2011.) u izdanju Instituta za povijest umjetnosti u Zagrebu. Broj će u cijelosti biti posvećen izložbi, a okupit će razgovore s autorima/umjetnicima čiji su radovi prezentirani na izložbi te teorijske i kritičke tekstove autora koncepcije izložbe i nekolicine pozvanih autora.
